Kawasaki K3V Hydraulic Pump: Axial Piston Shoe Fatigue and Cylinder Block Wear Analysis
Technical investigation of axial piston shoe fatigue and cylinder block wear in a Kawasaki K3V hydraulic pump operating under cyclic high-pressure loading.
Incident Metadata and Classification
System Category: Hydraulics Failure Severity: Critical Maintenance Type: Corrective Maintenance Failure Progression: Gradual Classification Society: DNV
Operational Symptoms and Verification
The unit accumulated approximately 1,200 operating hours. Unstable pressure fluctuations exceeding 300 bar were recorded together with elevated hydraulic oil temperatures. Oil analysis revealed increased metallic particle concentration and degradation of viscosity characteristics.
Wear Mechanism and Root Cause Analysis
Inspection revealed surface spalling on the axial piston shoes, localized scoring on the cylinder block surface, and evidence of hydrodynamic oil film instability in the contact zone with the swash plate.
Technical Intervention and Reconstruction
Complete disassembly of the hydraulic rotating group was performed, followed by precision grinding of the cylinder block to restore dimensional tolerances. Worn piston shoes and axial pistons were replaced with OEM components. Post-repair bench testing under nominal operating pressure confirmed restoration of operational integrity.
Prevention
Continuous monitoring of pressure fluctuations, hydraulic oil cleanliness control according to ISO 4406, and strict adherence to Kawasaki operating load recommendations are recommended.
